The 2008 World Series of Poker holds the record for the largest poker series in
world history. It broke last year’s total entrants high by 4,432, with 52,720
entries recorded. Last year’s total prize pool record was also broken by
$20,880,030, with $180,676,248 won, or to be won via the main event, by players
in the Series’ 55 events.
Also the number of entrants who live outside the United States went up
significantly this year again. In 2004, there were 24 countries represented,
this increased to 41 in 2005, then 54 in 2006. Last year’s WSOP had 87
countries represented, and this year the number rose to a spectacular 118,
proving the ever growing global popularity of this major poker event.
Excluding WSOP main events, the second event this summer, a $1,500 no-limit
hold’em event, attracted the most entrants of any live poker tournament in
history with 3,929 entrants.
Much is laid on to help WSOP players relax during the 20 minute breaks, as well
